Temperature rise of non-greased roller bearings

Temperature rise of non-greased roller bearings

Temperature rise of non-greased roller bearings

(OP)
Hi All,

Has anybody come across a book/reference where they discuss the rate of temperature increase observed when a bearing is run with little or no grease?
I mean, is there a way to get a ballpark of how quickly the temperature increases if one knows the rpm, the loads, etc?
Do you know of any published experiments/studies where bearings have been run with no lubrication, and overall temperature has been observed?

Thanks!

RE: Temperature rise of non-greased roller bearings

NO lubricant is likely to create a problem.

Minimal lubricant, using one of the fancy spindle greases, after a proper grease break-in, can result in almost no temperature rise up to surprisingly high dN values using superprecision bearings and appropriate machinnig tolerances with no special cooling other than being in an iron spindle housing.

Lesser bearings and common greases will not be able to achieve any where near those dN.

Whatcha trying to do?

Thanks Tmoose.
Just trying to figure out how hot can a bearing get and how long it can run if it is not greased, or if the grease has lost its capacity to lubricate properly.
