I am attaching a clip to a wide flange. The clip is welded to the web and the top and the bottom flange on the inside of the wide flange. Based on the load, I am able to calculate the thickness of the clip as well as the weld size. How do I find out if the parent component, in this case, the wide flange is strong enough to withstand the stresses. Appreciate any insights into this.

RE: structural attachment

Why are you connecting to the flanges?

The attachment can be welded to the flanges nad web or just web only.

RE: structural attachment

What's a clip?  An angle?

RE: structural attachment

If you are not anticipating some sort of torsional resistance from the WF beam, you can assume that the beam is adequate if it is capable of resisting the shear and moment resulting from the load and that it does not exceed deflection limits set out in the code.

RE: structural attachment

Depends on the direction of the load with respect to the major and minor axes too here...
