Lab testing of "unlisted" materials for use to B31.3

Lab testing of "unlisted" materials for use to B31.3

Does anyone have any suggestions for where to start in gathering lab data for unlisted materials for use to B31.3?

I would like to use an unlisted material that is manufactured to a specification meeting the needed B31.3 requirements (heat treatment, composition, strength, ect.); however, this specificaiton is not listed in B31.3.  Following the code, it appears this specification could be used provided the allowable stress is computed per paragraph 302.3.  However, to calculate the allowable stress, I need elevated temperature data, which would need to come from a labratory experiment.

Does anyone who has gone through this process have any suggestions?

RE: Lab testing of "unlisted" materials for use to B31.3

Read carefully 302.3.2 and compare with how allowable stress values in ASME Section II, part D, Table 1B are derived. If they are the same methodology, you can use the allowable stress values in Section II, Part D, Table 1B directly.

I am trying to quailify brass per spec ASTM B453, which unfortunately does not make an appearance in the section II tables.  This specification seems to be a fairly common brass to use in industry for brass fittings of various types, so it seems odd it is not present.
