RE: Which one is better Bromine or Calcium Hypochlorite

Conventional wisdom is that bromine products offer the best performance at high pH that some cooling towers operate.

Hypobromous acid predominates below pH 8.7, making bromine donors more effective than chlorine donors in alkaline cooling waters, especially where contact time is limited.

However, chlorine is considered to be a stronger oxidizer than bromine and is a less expensive chemical. Bromates are considered to be more hazardous than chlorine and are more regulated.

There are some products available that have both chlorine and bromine. You may consider alternating your use of these products since some organisms tend to acclimate to the use of a single product.

thanks a lot for your help bimr. Appreciate it.

Hello, from the standpoint of efficiency, you should consider that as a function of pH hypochlorite is effective at pH 6 -7. What I see is that you can have long-term scaling problems due to the form of calcium. If you can use sodium hypochlorite would be excellent.
