I have a project that requires deriving the drilled pier capacity from skin friction.  I know that we can typically neglect the self weight of the pier in an end bearing condition because the soil weight being displaced is not that much less than the pier weight replacing it, however I'm not sure this applies to a skin friction condition.

I don't know why there would be a difference.  Pile capacity design is not a precise thing.

I think the project requirement states that whatever capacity you get from side shear, you have to deduct the wt of the driller pier to calculated the actual capacity.

Actual capacity of pier = TOtal capacity using side shear - Wt of driller pier

Many geotekkies when queried about this, will neglect the weight of the concrete.

On another matter, the concrete placed in a friction pile should be vibrted for the top 10' just to consolidate it.
