Design of Mat foundation

Design of Mat foundation

Design of Mat foundation

(OP)
I've used STAAD pro to model a mat foundation as a plate member. The foundation is subjected to varying magnitudes of point loads scattered over the mat in a non-systematic manner.
I've managed to get a stress distribution over the plate.
I'm brand new to this and I am not sure how to design the concrete or reinforcing steel for a setup like this. Any guidance at all would be very appreciative.
Also, is STAAD pro able to turn convert those stresses into moments?

Thanks!

RE: Design of Mat foundation

you can let staad design the reinforcement by assigning the plates as concrete with certain thickness then input concrete cover thinkness, rebar dia, etc..

in the post processing tab, staad gives you plate stresses as well as maximum moments in different axis, etc..

you should be careful dealing with concentrated nodal loads as it will overstress the plate around it. it maybe necessary to spread this concentrated load.

RE: Design of Mat foundation

You should be able to switch your graphical output to show moments instead of stresses.

I use RISA-3D, and it is able to do this.

Thanks for the help so far!

However, the output file shows reinforcing required for the Moment-X and Moment-Y which is fine. But my model was design with Y being the vertical axis (eg my loads were applied in the - negative Y direction). Therefore I am interested in the reinforcing required for moments about the X and Z axis. Is there a way to go about doing this?

Thank you!

Ah, I just realized that the output file considers the plate elements in the LOCAL coordinate system. That makes a little bit more sense.

Thanks!
