Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

(OP)
Hi everyone, first i offer my apologies for my english i'm from Chile then i need to improve my language

here is my question:

i need to cut a riser of a high chromium white iron as cast alloy, the hardness is betwen 500 and 600 Brinell, i need to cut it in the middle (half) for make it a macro ettching to analize the Macrosegragation, can you tell me how can i do?

thanks

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

Clue: How did you separate the riser from the casting? Use the same technique.

i want to do that, but i need a exelent surface, i want to see the Macrosegregation then i need a good surface, i'd like cut with a disk, maybe with beulher or stuers, but the riser is too big so i need to cut in situ... do you understand me?

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

You will need to use your production saw to cut it down so that you can use you water cooled lab saw for the final cuts.
We used to cast notches in the feeders and risers then break them with hammers.  They almost always broke at the notches.

This stuff is really hard to cut.  I assume that you are using it for abrasion resistant parts in a mining application.

yeah, we try to cut that way, but the time is very long

i think in the notches, for me is the only way for cut the riser so, how i can improve the surface for macro etching?

thanks

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

Ed has spilled the beans (no star for you!). Why do you need to look at the riser? I would rather look at the casting. Is this some kind of project work?

And it makes a difference what type of abrasive wheel you use. I have seen Stellite 1 and 6 risers cut off "freehand" with right wheel; that is, some wheels will cut quickly with a minimum of heating, You will still need some grinding and polishing to see microstructure

Thank you.

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

That is one hell of a chuck of iron to cut.
Offhand I haven't seen anything that big sectioned as your scribe line.

Is there a rock quarry near you that uses abrasive cable for cutting?
They also might b able to to polish your sectioned

One other possible is use something like a Blanchard Grinder.  The only problem is that you will loose 1/2 to dust.

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

A wire EDM would be my approach.

A second alternative would be a BIG rock saw, like unclesyd suggests, see if a local granite quarry can help you out.

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

Adding a little more.
If you could find someone that uses a bridge type blade saw to cut Granite.
WF Myers is one maker of abrasive cable saw.  As posted before you need to locate any one in the stone mining or cutting business.
You will still have to use a surface grinder to give you a suitable finish which I think will be good enough. If not look to Granite and Marble polishers.

You might check around and find someone with a wet abrasive oscillating saw.like the Everett linked below.   I would check any metal refining company.  You might have to buy a blade for your material.
As your piece is so big you might want to dice it into smaller sections and the split in smaller sections.  You are cutting the hard way.

Just to give you a little more insight on stone saws that are out there.  Here are some big ones in China but there others out there..

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

How about hacking in a notch with a carbide cutter and then hitting it really hard with a hammer. Unconventional, I know, but it's how I used to section white iron before grinding.

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

We have cut reasonably large 27% chromium white iron parts using water jet cutting followed by conventional grinding and polishing to look at macrosections through weld repairs.

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

Weld repairs? Please describe or explain,I am interested. Thanks.

hi everyone, i find Wire Cut (Electro erosion) in fact today i will cut by this way, it's very expensive, but i need to cut...
thanks everyone for your help...
bye

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

Appreciate the feedback and good luck.

The is the correct version of my last post.

You might be able to find someone with this type endless loop saw from Well Diamond,

Quote from their website

"The Model 7243 can accommodate parts as large as 470 mm high
x 470 mm deep (18.5 x 18.5 inches approx.).  Length of the part is unlimited as long as the part can be supported.
The Model 9245 New. "

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

You might to look at Fire Wire (9099) from Weld Mold as a means to trim your part to manageable size and then grind.
As it appears that you deal with thick cross sections you might want to file the information.

RE: Help with High Chromium White Iron As Cast

Unless the project is for a space mission, using such expensive techniques for such a simple job is like committing harakiri.Simplest would have been creating a notch in mold, deepening the groove if required, knocking off and then turning on a low rpm heavy duty lathe.
