Standard voltages for a 50 Hz system

Standard voltages for a 50 Hz system

Standard voltages for a 50 Hz system

(OP)
Dear All,

Sorry if this question sounds stupid, but I always worked with 60 Hz systems (Brazil standard) and now I have to design a 50 Hz system.

I would like you to help me with the commonly used voltages for 50 Hz. I am thinking in adopt the system described below:

11kV Primary distribution system

6,3kV M.V. system - 6kV motors or 6,9kV M.V. system - 6,6kV motors

725V L.V. system - 690V motors or 440V L.V. system - 400V motors or

400/230V for Lighting, welding machines and auxiliaries systems

As far as I know, the IEC 60038 sets the standard voltages, but the supply system is not very clear for some voltage levels.

I tried to contact some suppliers, but in Brazil they are not used to 50Hz systems and they are taking too long to answer me.

Thanks in advance.

Raphael

dbaird, that list seems to be really old.
Europe has been harmonized to 230/400 V for many years.

"Europe has been harmonized to 230/400 V for many years."
Hey look at Canada, the standard was upgraded from 115/230 to 117/234 to 120/240 about 50 years ago. (The whole story was a gradual upgrade from 110 Volts (and multiples) to 120 Volts over a span of 20 years. I remember seeing appliances rated at 110 Volts, 112 Volts, 115 Volts and 117 Volts Finally topping out at 120 Volts.
From this you may guess that I have been in Canada for quite awhile. I have never seen a system running at 110/120 Volts.
That's not a list that I would depend on.

RE: Standard voltages for a 50 Hz system

New Zealand has 230/400 3.3KV, 11 kV
Australia has 230/400 but I'm not sure about the higher voltages

RE: Standard voltages for a 50 Hz system

Using IEC 60038 IEC Standard voltages (edi 6.2 2002-07)is a good start.
Values for 50 hz system are :
230/400 V and 400/690 V with mention that existing 220/380 and 240/415 V systems shall evolve toward the recommend value of 230/400 V.

According to the same standard, you have a number of options for larger loads (from 3 to 40 kV) but personally I would first check with local industry practices since you want to be able to easily find qualified labors and spare parts.
It's hard to give you more detailed information not knowing where the installation will be located.
