Flame arrestor

Flame arrestor

Flame arrestor

(OP)
For a tank (400 BBL) built to API 12F type A (Flat),

is it mandatory to install a flame arrestor?

If it is, please indicate standard, code or recommended practice.

Thanks,

Corgas

RE: Flame arrestor

What is in this tank?  A flame arrester is to prevent an external flame from being ingested into a tank with volatile fluids when the tank breaths in.  You make the call.  Your insurance company might have an opinion.

See Section 21.4.3 in NFPA-30, also API-2000.

RE: Flame arrestor

I personally have never run into this.  Usually, with the stuff I have seen, the tanks that handle volatile fluids at high RVP are connected via blanket gas to the fuel gas system (inbreathing) and flare system (outbreathing), and any flame arrestor in the system is situated between the FKOD and the flare stack.

Is this the flame arrestor for tank inbreathing, or is the tank equipped with a heating firetube with a flame arrestor on the firetube?

Regards,

SNORGY.
