weld procedure

weld procedure

(OP)
Hi!

I am looking for some advice regarding the approval range of a WPQR we have, relating to a certain joint fit up.

We have a nozzle 1" Sch 80 4.55mm thick, this is being welded to a flange which is drilled to the internal bore of the 1" pipe. Our weld procedure is qualified upto around 8mm thick.

The thickness of the flange is 50mm thick, our weld thickness is is 4,55mm thick with some re-inforcement, will our weld procedue cover this set up?

I would call the fit up a tee joint

Do you have an actual weld procedure specification (WPS) written that is supported by this WPQR? Is the WPQR for a groove weld with the correct welding  process and base materials?

What you describe is a fillet welded nozzle to a flange. If this is the case, a WPS for fillet welds supported by a WPQR for a groove weld would work.

Read ASME B&PV Code, Section IX, especially QW-451.4. You make no mention of base materials, I would presume you are working with P-No 1 base materials?

(OP)
We have a qualified WPQR as a butt weld with the correct grade of material, but there is some conflict regarding the 50mm flange, even though we are only depositing 4.55mm weld metal.

The weld will be classified as a butt weld, the material is P43 Nickel alloy.

RE: weld procedure

This is why I mentioned above for a fillet weld, not a groove weld attachment. If you are joining a nozzle to the flange using a partial penetration weld and fillet, then you need base material qualified to 50mm thickness. Read ASME B&PV Code, Section IX!!!!

There is a section specifically for dissimilar thickness materials, which I have read. It does not seem sensible due to the fact that the thickness of deposited weld metal only being 4.55mm thick, I was wondering whether there are any other sections which could help me in this situation.

The price of qualifying a procedure for this material is massive.

RE: weld procedure

ljg1:
I can't follow what you are doing. Can you attach a sketch of the weld joint? Is the entire flange solid P-No 43 or is there a corrosion resistant weld overlay? What is the overlay thickness?

RE: weld procedure

ljg1,
If you are talking about Joint 01 in your sketch - no problem, your WPS is fine.
If you are talking about N5, N6, N7 & N8 then you have a problem.

QW-202.4 Dissimilar Base Metal Thicknesses. WPS
qualified on groove welds shall be applicable for production
welds between dissimilar base metal thicknesses provided:
(a) the thickness of the thinner member shall be within
the range permitted by QW-451
(b) the thickness of the thicker member shall be as
follows:
(1) For P-No. 8, P-No. 41, P-No. 42, P-No. 43, PNo.
44, P-No. 45, P-No. 46, P-No. 49, P-No. 51, P-No.
52, P-No. 53, P-No. 61, and P-No. 62 metal, there shall
be no limitation on the maximum thickness of the thicker
production member in joints of similar P-Number materials
provided qualification was made on base metal having a
thickness of 1⁄4 in. (6 mm) or greater.

You noted that your WPS was good up to 8 mm which leads me to believe that the base metal for your PQR was 4mm. This is less than the required 6mm as per QW202.4 (b)

Kiwi
