garage door relay

(OP)
I need help.  I work at a fire station and I need a relay, or some device that will keep our station safe.  Here is what I need it to do.  When the tones drop at our station, I need the garage doors to open, wait 3 minutes, and then close behind us.  I also need to be able to manually open the garage door without it shutting automatically.  If the garage door is open and the tones drop, I need the doors to shut after 3 minutes.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

RE: garage door relay

A smart relay or a micro PLC can do the job for you.  You'll need to come up with an interface, like an interposing relay to generate a signal from whatever drives the tones.  You'll also need to determine if your door opener command uses a maintained or pulse contact to open and close.  I would also suggest adding a beam sensor to assure the door doesn't close on anything that may be in the door.

If you work for some kind of city or county agency, maybe someone who does your streetlight controls can help you?

Doesn't seem like a difficult project, just need to gather the details about what you already have in place, and figure out the best way to automate it.

Hope that helps,

Mike L.
