Hi, i have a problem with the criteria for the selection of the system class?? In the norm it only says the different tipes of systems (Class 1, Class 2 or Class 3) but it doesnt say anything about wich one to use depending the hazard?????

I hope some one could help me with this. Thanks

The building code determines what type of standpipes.   What is the applicable building code?

If you can answer that, perhaps we could be more help.

Fundamentally, Section 5.1.2 says "check with the AHJ;" i.e., look at the local building codes as suggested by others.

NFPA 14 tells you how to install standpipes, not when to install them.  Same way that NFPA 13 tells you how to install sprinkler systems, but it does not give you the requirements of when to install them.

Find out what the governing code is in the area you are working (for example the IBC).  Also, certain municipalities (AHJ) can have their own codes that will override it for a more specific application.

As stated , Normaly starts with the building/ fire code the ahj has adopted

Then depends on the occupancy group

Size of building sometimes

And if the building has a fire sprinkler system

Also sometimes the fire code will dictate standpipe uncertain hazards

I suggest you provide a Class III standpipe. It will comply in all building codes in the US or Canada and can quickly be converted to Class I or II service.

The big questions are:

1) Wet or dry
2) Manual or automatic

Ok i see, thanks for all the answers! i was in the field so couldnt respond sooner. I checked out the building code and it helped me out. Thanks again!
