how much relearning NX5 to NX7.5

how much relearning NX5 to NX7.5

how much relearning NX5 to NX7.5

(OP)
We will join GM when they "upgrade" from 5 to 7.5 this April.

We have three users with experience at least back to v18.
Our supervisor would like to know if we need training. When we went from 3 to 5 we took some GMonline courses to acquaint ourselves. But I believe from experience that using it is the best training.

Question to you folks, on a scale of 10, how much relearning is required for NX5 users to go to nx7.5?

Thanks

RE: how much relearning NX5 to NX7.5

I'll let existing customers give their own opinions, but there are a few things to keep in mind.  For one, NX 5.0 was when we made the big change to the new style dialogs. For NX 7.5 what you will find is only minor tweaks to this general dialog scheme, just that more and more of NX will be using the new style with each new release, so the coverage has improved over the course of 3 releases.  Also, if you have not yet moved from Mating Conditions to Assembly Constraints, with NX 7.5 you will have no choice since you will no longer be able to edit or create Mating Conditions (existing models will still be valid and will update correctly, just that they can't be edited unless Mating Conditions are first converted to Assembly Constraints).

I invite any users with first hand experience to add their 2 cents worth (or nickel if that better describes it ;-)

It will take some getting used to, but it really isn't too overwhelming.
Make sure to make use of the command finder,as  many of the commands have moved.
Help > command finder
It is also on your "Standard" toolbar

The hole command will take some getting used to - I think NX5 did it the old way, but I don't remember.
It helps if they had experience in SolidWorks, because it is similar to that. Initially it may seem like a pain, but it is quite nice after you get used to it.

I will be going to NX7.5 soon, but from NX6, so my jump won't be as long as yours.

RE: how much relearning NX5 to NX7.5

The new Hole Feature was in NX 5.0, just that it was not 100% finished.  That came in NX 6.0.

And yes, the Command Finder is well worth looking into. I've even added a hot-key to make it easier to FIND the Command Finder.

And nx5 still has a prenx5 hole option, I use this the most unless doing the occasional fixture design where the c'bore and screw clearance standards can be applied.

I will 99% of the time locate with an existing point. The nx5 hole requires that point to be on the surface or very near the surface within tolerance or it will pick its own nearest surface:(. This is why I still use prenx5 hole.

So break the news to me now, the Pre nx5 hole operator goes away right?

RE: how much relearning NX5 to NX7.5

You won't have any problems accessing the pre-NX 5.0 hole function in NX 6.0 and NX 7.0, however starting with NX 7.5, while it will still be possible, it will require a bit more effort. Eventually it will be removed altogether, but not for at least one more release.

BTW, that 'next release' does address one of the major outstanding issues with respect to the new Hole Feature. You will now be able to edit the 'type' of an existing hole, such as changing a Threaded Hole into a Clearance Hole or vice versa. Also note that starting with the next release, new Threaded Holes will now be properly copied when creating WAVE linked or mirrored bodies.

Editing the hole type after creation is a long-awaited and excellent improvement.
