dears lady and gentlemen,

i am new in construction industry, and i have some curious about environmental studies.

i realized, nowadays, everyone is concern about climate changes; and yet, construction industry contributed a lot problems to our environment. How can we reduce the critical problem? Since transport is a compulsory in construction site.

Besides, i feel confuse about the term using glass is good for green building. As my knowledge, glass would reflect the heat to outside; therefore, it trapped in environment and caused the ambient temperature increasing. Am i right?

Thanks for respond and your opinion is grateful.

RE: climate changes.

I think the primary environmental impact from new construction is the construction materials and subsequent heating/cooling (once the facility is in operation), not transportation to the job-site.

I know making cement is a large contributor to greenhouse gases.

Glass will trap solar heat during the day, but will let infrared radiation (heat) escape at night.  Therefore blinds, curtains, or other ways of covering the glass is crucial.  Double paned windows are spendy but will prevent conductive heat transport - another loss.

This of course, assumes you live in a climate that has greater heating needs than cooling needs.

RE: climate changes.

Your comments and questions are overly broad for a forum.  While they might make for interesting discussion in a group of 4 or 5 like-minded engineers, they are not succinct enough to create an interest in a directed, pointed forum group...perhaps you could offer/ask specific questions that might be answered by a group...however, it would likely be more productive to ask environmental questions of those who specialize in environmental issues...this forum is for structural engineers....very specific, not broad.

RE: climate changes.

Sorry...I should have stated "Civil Engineers" instead of structural...same applies, even though "Civils" delve into environmental issues as well.

Thanks to freedom40oz  for your details comments, and i think it is useful to me.

Ron, i thought this group is under civil / environmental engineering ?! isn't it?

RE: climate changes.

Yes, but your first question is far too broad. I could type for a week, still not cover the topic evn briefly and bore everybody else with a wall of text too.

Give an engineer a speciifc issue - we're detail people.
