Can socket head cap screws per A-574M be used in VIII-1 construction?
SA-574 is an approved specification in VIII-1, but SA-574M does not appear (at least in the 2007 version). Can A-574M fasteners be used?
I am looking for a high strength fastener like a 12.9 graded fastener. SA-193M (approved in the spec.) strength is not high enough.
Thanks.

So you definitely can't use A-574M with the basic 12.9 chemistry. But is there a way for the code to allow an SA-574 screw with a supplement 1 chemistry and an ASME B1.13 thread cut into it? I don't know. As far as I can tell, a strict legal reading would say no, but this sounds like the kind of thing that would have a loophole designed to allow it.
I don't know if such a loophole exists or not, but U-4 is not it.
