Timber Floor Panel/Joist Connection

Timber Floor Panel/Joist Connection

Timber Floor Panel/Joist Connection

(OP)
I hav'nt done much work with timber before and I need to deermine the size and amount of screws I need to connect OSB flooring to a sold timber joist. I not quite sure how to go about it. Is it governed by shear forces?how would you consider the connection to be loaded? Please Help......Thanks!

RE: Timber Floor Panel/Joist Connection

I believe this is to do with diaphragm action and preventing bcuckling of the board, it is not for bending strength.

RE: Timber Floor Panel/Joist Connection

As csd said design it for shear as you would any other diaphragm, assuming you are using it as one. I recommend screws and glue to prevent squeaks and noises which is the #1 complaint when it comes to homeowners and wood floors...

RE: Timber Floor Panel/Joist Connection

Design for shear. A standard screw should give you a nominal shear capacity of 1 or 2kN. I would fixings every 12" with elastomeric adhesive. If this can transfer the shear forces from the diaphram to the bracing element than I would leave it at that.

RE: Timber Floor Panel/Joist Connection

The minimum floor diaphragm for nails is 6" at the plywood or OSB panel edges and 10" OC in the panel field.

I would use the same for screws, making sure the shear capacity of the screw was the same as the IBC table shows for nails.
