ASTM A105 what does it mean?
ASTM A105 what does it mean?
(OP)
Hello everybody,
as a german engineer I am not too familiar with ASME codes and standards. In an enquiry my customer requires connection Material acc. to ASTM A105.
What does this mean? Is it the material itself or does this concern the geometry? As a standard we use mat. no. 1.4571 stainless steel pipes 10x2mm.
Is that adequate?
Thanks in advance
Holger

In absence of an european equivalent grade, I assimilite it to C22.8.
According to our experience C22.8 can be equivalent to LF2 also (contrary to A105; A105 can work down to -20°F(-29°C) and LF2 to -50°F(-46°C)). DIN specification limits C22.8 to -10°C.

So you are right A105 is a material(or manufacturing process of accs.)issue.
B16.5 define material groups in order to stablish a basic compatibility among materials of different manufacturing proceses.
Group 1.1. includes ASTM A105 (a forged carbon steel) and ASTM A515 Gr. 70 ( carbon steel plate for pressure vessel) for example. So you may find on the "hardware store" a forged welding neck A105 and a A515 70 blind flange, which are basically compatible under B16.5 (resist the same presure and are of similar material). Each group has a correspondent "pressure temperaure rating" as per B16-5.
For stainless steel there are other material groups (which I´m not very used to).
If you are thinking of SS pipes and the customer in A105 CS fittings (common CS flanges) you have to ask yourself if you should clarify this situation (justify the need of SS for pipes, change to CS pipes and get a lot of money from it, weld with care, or see if there was a customer mistake specifyin A105).
