Machine Welding Acceptable?

Machine Welding Acceptable?

Machine Welding Acceptable?

(OP)
I'm looking in the ASME code, Section VIII or IX if in somewhere it is mentioned that the application of welding should not be machined.

RE: Machine Welding Acceptable?

Weld metal that meets Code requirements is allowed to be machined with the same rules as the basemetal.  Problem is that the weld tends to be harder & tougher than the basemetal, so Good Engineering Practice is to avoid machining welds.  Makes the machinist cry.

RE: Machine Welding Acceptable?

No such reference.

RE: Machine Welding Acceptable?

This may be a translation problem  My take on the question was that he was asking if he could use a welding machine (versus manual welding).

Reply translated; Yes, provided the auto or semi-automatic welding process and welder are qualified to the requirements in ASME B&PV Code, Section IX.

RE: Machine Welding Acceptable?

If the question is in fact about actually machining a weld, as Metengr commented, there is no such restriction, and is very much common practice to machine weld build-ups, particularly on end preps when dealing with eccentric pipe.

As Duwe6 mentioned, it's not always the easiest thing to machine, and there's nothing quite like the sound of the bit of a pneumatic milling machine chattering away as it resonates through a building.  Well, aside from the screams of construction management when they see the invoice...
