IEEE journals or magizines on motors and drives

IEEE journals or magizines on motors and drives

IEEE journals or magizines on motors and drives

Does anyone know if there are any good IEEE jornals or magizines that are focused specifically on Motors and Drives or something close?

This is a topic I am becoming more and more interested in, and wanted to see if there was an IEEE publication or even society related to this topic.

RE: IEEE journals or magizines on motors and drives

The Industry Applications Society (IAS) has a whole lot of interest in motors, drives, and plant electrical equipment. There are many conferences sponsored by IAS that have that focus, including PCIC.

The cost for access to all associated publications is $20 year when you have an IEEE membership (which itself is about $200 per year). I find a lot of articles of practical interest in there.

The DEIS is also $20 per year and has a small number of articles published related to motor insulation testing and evaluation... I don't find many that I am interested in. Seems more focused toward heavy R&D rather than practical stuff.

Here is a list of publications for IAS:
http://ewh.ieee.org/soc/ias/cms/content/section/8/30/

Quote:

IAS Related Publications

    Applied Power Electronics Conference Proceedings
    Cement Industry Technical Conference Proceedings
Electric Machines & Drives Conference Proceedings
    IEEE Industry Applications Magazine
    IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications -- All Periodical CD ROM
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications -- Annual Collection CD ROM
Industrial & Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference Proceedings
Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings
Petroleum & Chemical Industry Technical Conference Proceedings
    Power Conversion Conference Proceedings
Power Electronics, Drive & Energy Systems for Industrial Growth Proceedings
Pulp & Paper Industry Conference Proceedings
    Rural Electric Power Conference Proceedings
Note it includes Electric Machines and Drives Conference. I have found I am not able to access (for free) some of the historical articles from that conference but can access all the new ones.  In contrast for PCIC and IAS Transactions and Industry Applications Magazine you can view/download any article that has ever been published in those conferences (at least in the last 20 years or so).  So if you join you have immediate access to a ton of stuff without waiting for new articles to be published.

If you are an IEEE member you can use the "advanced search" feature at IEEE XPLORE.

Search for
publication title contains "applications"
and
metadata contains "motor"

You'll be amazed. (at least I was... like a kid in a candy store).

RE: IEEE journals or magizines on motors and drives

On a much smaller and more specialized scale, it's worth mentioning that "Electrical Apparatus" is available for free to those who have a professional interest.  It is focused on the motor repair industry, published monthly and usually has at least one good technical article by their technical editor Richard Nailen.

If you interested google it... possibly Bark's Publications.

Second electripete's suggestion, Electrical Apparatus from Barks is outstanding and Nailen writes very well.  Their regular feature, "Let's solve your problem", covers subjects all over the electrical map with thoroughly researched answers to technical questions from those of us in the service business

Thanks for all the great suggestions.

I am already a member of the IEEE IAS and agree that there are some good topics regarding motors and drives that are sometimes covered.

I was just curious if there were any specific societies focusing on just those topics.  I will definitely look into some of the other items that you suggested as well as the Nailen publication.

RE: IEEE journals or magizines on motors and drives

Unfortunately, the subject of motors and drives is split over many areas within the IEEE, which can make it very frustrating to get the desired information. I agree with the others that the Industrial Applications Society is the best place to start. But Industrial Electronics is important to (I was just reading an article last night on SiC inverters in their magazine). There can also be good information sometimes in the Control Systems and Robotics and Automation Society.

RE: IEEE journals or magizines on motors and drives

Just to mention, if you use "APPLICATIONS" in the publication title, and motor in keyword (meta-data) it will pull up 8,522 results.  At least half of those will be inside your subscription as an IAS member.  At least a quarter of those are interesting practical stuff (imo).  That is still around 1000 articles. For me it is plenty of reading material, not a lot of need to look for more.

By the way I am not in anyway saying there's not good stuff in the other societies (I havnen't checked them out). I was just wanting to make sure you understand what you already have access to.

In the UK there is the organization called GAMBICA (GAMBICA is the national organisation representing the interests of companies in the instrumentation, control, automation and laboratory technology industry in the UK) that includes a group specialising on Variable Speed Drives (or VFD's if you prefer). The group is an association consisting of most drives companies who contribute to technical documents and useful data. The are proudly 'non-commercial' and are not there to promote the individual companies so the type of information you get is typically very good. I know a lot of the contributors and you get the best out of companies such as Siemens, Danfoss, ABB, etc without the spin..

As you will see, there are many other areas too.

In the UK a good trade magazine is Drives and Controls.
