Can A276 316 Be used in ASME B31.3?

Can A276 316 Be used in ASME B31.3?

Can A276 316 Be used in ASME B31.3?

(OP)
A276 316 is not an ASME B31.3 listed material, but it is a specification very similar to A479 316, which is a listed material.

Does anyone know if it is possible to determine the allowable stress of A276 316 at an elevated temperature of 200F for allowable use in ASME B31.3.

Thanks!

RE: Can A276 316 Be used in ASME B31.3?

The SA 276 material is not for pressure retaining service in boiler or pressure vessel applications, which is the reason for not having an allowable stress listing in ASME Section II. Why not obtain SA 479 in this Grade?

Unfortunately I already have some parts made out of A276 316.  After looking at the code, it appears I would need the strength of this material at 200 F in order to perform the needed calculations.  This does not appear to be published as part of the specification.

RE: Can A276 316 Be used in ASME B31.3?

If this is for a non-pressure part application, use the allowable stress value for SA 479. However, be advised that if this is for pressure retaining application, you are not code compliant.

RE: Can A276 316 Be used in ASME B31.3?

Why does ASME B31.3 Appendix A Footnote 37 refer to A276 fittings if it's not code compliant? This isn't a trick question; I'm new to piping codes and still trying to find my way through them.

RE: Can A276 316 Be used in ASME B31.3?

My best guess is ASME B31.3 Appendix A Footnote 37 is talking about the consturction tools being made out of A276 material, and not the actual material the fitting is constructed from.
