Is there a differnce in the way that the dP across an orifice should be calculated if the opening is rectangular, rather than round?

OH most definitely there is.  Flow at segment corners is quite different than across an infinite circular line.

Pressure Drop calcs take into account the difference in areas A2/A1 and a correction factor (probably found experimentally... vendor should be able to provide the correction factor or the pressure drop based on conditions... density, flow rate, radius etc.
