Deburring Waterjet Cut Copper Sheet

Deburring Waterjet Cut Copper Sheet

Hi, not sure if this is the right forum to have this in- but I have had some gaskets water jet cut from copper sheet, 0.5mm thick which has a left large burrs around the cuts on the rear (and a small lip on the front).

What options do I have for deburring them- I have looked into the regular options but as these are gaskets and need to be perfectly uniform thickness I dont believe many are suitable.  They are approx 18" long by 5" wide, and only 19thou thick, so easy to damage.

At the moment I'm doing it manually with a good steel edge and needle files, but of course this is far from ideal in terms of speed!

RE: Deburring Waterjet Cut Copper Sheet

Hi Tom,
I know copper is not the best material for laser cutting, but most shops will cut 3mm or less, and it might solve the burr problem.

I was under the impression that most places dont laser copper as they can damage the head by reflection or something along those lines!

If it's gaskets, perhaps you want to eliminate all sharps.  How many parts do you have?  Maybe economical to have them deburred in bulk vibratory machine with appropriate media.  Otherwise maybe some of those flexible abrasive filament brushes from 3M & others.

Maybe you could have the water-jet contractor just cut halfway through and then turn the sheet over and cut from the other side.  That way you would get the radius on both sides.

Just kidding...

I worked with this gentleman years ago.  He is world renowned as a deburr expert.  You could get some good advice from him.

Thermal deburr might work.
