Helicoil shear out area...

(OP)
In calculating the shear strength of an helicoil, what is the appropriate shear area:
- the projected area (pi*D*L) or
-just the circumferential area (pi*r*r)?

Note: r & D both are pitch radius and diameter
      L = engagement length

RE: Helicoil shear out area...

Hi tokiabi

Have a look in the helicoil catalogue on page 11:-

http://www.helicoil.in/pdf/HeliCoil%20Catalogue.pdf

But as a rough idea of a shear area for a helicoil, I would use the shear area of the tapped hole your making for the insertion of that helicoil.
