part winding starters in 460 volts

part winding starters in 460 volts

Hi Guys , ..does somebody knows if it is possible to start a 460 volts 3 phase electric motor with a part winding starter ??? per my knowledge you can only start in low voltage ( 230 v )..

my motor has 12 leads ..

RE: part winding starters in 460 volts

It's motor dependent. If your motor data says it can be started that way, then it can. If it doesn't specifically say it, you can't.

12 lead motors usually provide Y-Delta starting and dual voltage connections. Some however are built to allow Part Winding start and sacrifice the dual voltage option, common in motors that are too large to be run in a lower voltage anyway. Weg does it that way that I know of.

By the way jraef , wiring diagram just shows  Y-Delta Start .... and dual voltage ...

thanks for your support...

RE: part winding starters in 460 volts

Yes, part winding starters are used in HVAC applications. As the name implies, the stator winding has to be in two parts.

RE: part winding starters in 460 volts

Look on the name tag. If it's dual voltage 12 lead, then you can only part winding start on low voltage. If it's only 460, then your normally low voltage connection will work on 460 volts. Like was said, the larger 12 lead motors are usually single voltage, with the normally low voltage connection

RE: part winding starters in 460 volts

A 12-lead has 2 windings for each phase. It could be part winding started when these 2 windings are in parallel. This would me it's possible in the low voltage connections since the winding are only in parallel for the lower voltage. Even though the data typically only calls out a wye-delta type start with a single lower voltage, there are actually 2 voltages where it would be possible. For example, with a 230V/460V motor, a part winding start is possible at 230V delta or 400V wye. Obviously, the 400V wye connection likely won' be much use in North America where 480V is the common voltage.

RE: part winding starters in 460 volts

If your 12 lead motor is dual voltage you will probably be able to part-wind start it in the low voltage connection but not the high. If it is a single voltage motor you will probably be able to part wind-start it. I am attaching connection diagrams for part winding start of 9 and 12 lead motors.

Thanks
