Pile Splice Location

Pile Splice Location

Pile Splice Location

(OP)
The Contractor on a steel pile trestle bent bridge has proposed placing a welded pile splice within the concrete pile cap.

The pile (PP36x1.0) is embedded 36" into the cap and they wish to splice it 4" into the cap (prefabbed top 32" piece)

Would you have a concern in splicing that close to the top? The details of the bent assume that some moment will be developed at the connection and be transferred into the pile.

RE: Pile Splice Location

If the pile had needed to be spliced in order to drive it to its required depth or capacity, and if the splice just happened to wind up at 4" above the cap subgrade, would you still be asking this question?  Probably not.  It seems to me that, if the pile will be spliced properly, there should not be a problem.

Additionally, if the pipe pile is going to be filled with concrete there would be even less issues.
