pile caps/tie beams

pile caps/tie beams

(OP)
I am trying to find out the requirement for tie beams between pile caps in IBC 2009. Can someone locate the section reference please?

I remember from the old codes there was a 10% design value for the tie beams.

Thanks.

RE: pile caps/tie beams

Grade beams (tiebeams) are discussed in 1810.3.11 & 1810.3.12 in 2009 IBC.  There was no mention of the 10% design value.  1810.2.2 discusses stability requirments for pilecaps.
I usually design the GB (stabilizing 1PC & 2PC) for the moment and shear due to piles being out of tolerance

RE: pile caps/tie beams

There is a 0.1 Sds multiplier  on the seismic side on piles if that is what you are trying to refer to

RE: pile caps/tie beams

Who cares?  Ten percent of what, and what does it all mean?  Forget about it.  It has no meaning.

RE: pile caps/tie beams

I would perform a Strut and Tie model for the pile caps.

RE: pile caps/tie beams

casasf,
The 10% times Sds that slickdeals referred to in his reply is found in section 12.13.5.2 in ASCE 7-05.

RE: pile caps/tie beams

I hate it when people eagerly try to respond to a thread to help a fellow engineer and he/she disappears and we keep guessing as to what his question really is.

RE: pile caps/tie beams

slickdeals,

I understand what you mean, but if you look at the record, casasf has started three threads to date and has made only one response.  Does that tell you something?
