Trouble saving step/iges "Export Displayed Only"

Trouble saving step/iges "Export Displayed Only"

Trouble saving step/iges "Export Displayed Only"

(OP)
I'm trying to save down some 'outline'/'External Shell' non native models of large assemblies.

I'm creating display configurations with only external components displayed and then using the "Export Displayed Only" option when creating non native files.

Seems to work OK with Parasolid, and sort of with ACIS but when I try it with step or Iges I can't open the resultant files.

Anyone had experience with this?

Win XP, SE V19

Thanks.

Tag on question.

Is it my ever optimistic imagination, or is there somehow a way of automatically creating a configuration of just the parts that can be seen?

i.e. If you had an electronics box with a bunch of circuit boards in it, you'd be able to automatically create a configuration of just the parts you see so basically the enclosure.

I thought I'd done something like this before but I can't find it now.

Ok, found the visible part selection thing at thread562-281546: Assembly Occurrence Properties - Do Not Display at Next level though it doesn't do quite what I want.

Any tips on the 'Export Displayed Only' aspect appreciated though.

RE: Trouble saving step/iges "Export Displayed Only"

Hi Kenat,
There is the 'Select Visible Parts' command but that will turn off the display of anything that can't be seen (wholly or partially) from whatever view orientation you have displayed. You then save it as a view configuration.
I use it to cut down processing time for drawing views of very large assemblies.
The Do Not Display at Next Level may do what you want because that does exactly as described - prevents the display of parts in an assembly when it is attached to a higher level assembly. It will also remove the parts from any drawings of the higher level assembly.
We have just used this facility on many of our sub-assemblies so that we don't get all the fasteners coming through at the top level. It cuts down view manipulation and drawing view creation times.
It is also used to attach 'reference' parts and assemblies but I don't recommend that when the assemblies are large.

Can you post some images of your settings for the step and iges export?

Thanks beach.

I found your mention of the 'select visible parts' and was able to use it on a couple of the simpler system level models and just go through the tree and manually re show back panels etc.  However, for the more complex ones it didn't work.

The next level thing isn't really an option in this case as the individual assy's are already released (locked).  It's also a technique I'm not a fan of generally as I've been bitten by designing based on such simplified models only to find there are screw heads etc. in the way in the real world.  Though I realize there are times it may be the only real option.

Turned out in the end they wanted ACIS format .sat files on which the 'export displayed Only' does work.
