PWHT requirement for ASME section IX pipe welding

PWHT requirement for ASME section IX pipe welding

PWHT requirement for ASME section IX pipe welding

(OP)
Hi,
Please let me know if I'm right and add any other useful information that you deem necessary by experience and/or knowlege.

1. PWHT is not required for source service pipe welding per Section IX for B31.3 application except the thickness is 0.750" and above.

2. As long as the NACE hardness hardness test requirement is met, and good consumables are used, PWHT is not required for the procedure to be qualified for sour service?

the materials are A106Gr A, B, and C, also x-42 and x-52 pipe materials.

Thank you.

RE: PWHT requirement for ASME section IX pipe welding

Section IX does not specify if PWHT is required.
The construction code, in your case B31.3 will specify when PWHT is required and what conditions apply. You also need to refer to the applicable sevice category, i.e., normal, D, M, etc. to determine if the basic requirements applicable to all piping has been changed.

Once it has been determined if PWHT is required, Section IX specifies how the WPS will be qualified by testing and it differentiates between the various types of PWHT. Section IX defines when the change is considered to be an essential variable.

If the PWHT used for production welding is different from that used when the WPS was qualified, a new test coupon may need to be welded and tested. The need to requalify the WPS will be defined by Section IX.

Best regards - Al

RE: PWHT requirement for ASME section IX pipe welding

Under B31.3, the Owner is responsible for determining and specifying the added requirements for PWHT for service. If the Owner specifies PWHT for welds in Sour service, his decision governs. NACE specifies hardness limitations for Sour service and does not require PWHT to assure meeting those requirements. API 582 provides hardness testing requirements for procedure qualification.

Dido on what everyone else said, but additionally I would have a production welder weld a test pipe for each material you have listed in its most common size with the same welding wire and process you plan to use in production.  Have a hardness survey done on a cross-section per which ever NACE code is specified (MR0175 or MR0103) and add it as a supplement to your PQR.  In the end, you have to demonstrate your materials and production processes are capable to meet the NACE hardness requirements.  You will learn a lot from this process.
