Warping of Plate after Hot-dipped Galvanizing

Warping of Plate after Hot-dipped Galvanizing

Warping of Plate after Hot-dipped Galvanizing

(OP)
On a recent project, we were sandwich plating the webs on Bridge Floorbeams.
the approx dim's of the plate is 15' X 14" X .5"
I specified discreet plate  to be used because the plates were to be Hot-dipped Galvanized.

When the plates arrived back from the galvanizer they had a significant bend/curl.  I suspect the plate the fabricator used was from a coil, they swear its discreet and provided MTR's.
Any opinions as to whether they used coil or discreet?
Can a sample be tested to verify coil vs discreet?

RE: Warping of Plate after Hot-dipped Galvanizing

Generally, 1/2" plate is not coiled. Suggest having longitudinal micros made and metallurgically evaluated. If coiled, the coiling temperature will affect the microstructure and a competent metallurgist should be able to discern.

RE: Warping of Plate after Hot-dipped Galvanizing

after rolling they were cold flattened.  The hot dip was enough to relive some of the stress causing the bow.  the only option is to re-flatten them.

Hi rimFL

I have had similar experiences with hot dip galvanising sheet steel for gland plates, EdStainless is correct about the process causing some stress relieving, you could try stress relieving the plates before galvanising.
