CAN Bus, what kind of protocol ?

CAN Bus, what kind of protocol ?

CAN Bus, what kind of protocol ?

(OP)
Hi
CAN bus system in question is being used for industrial tool (not automotive). Maximum cable distance is no more than 5 meter. All device are mixture of dsPIC33 and PIC24.

The physical part of the CAN-Bus is simple, however it is not like UART protocol when exchanging message or data.

The CAN bus connection is simple, one master and many slaves (sensor), so what kind of high level protocol I need to develop, how to make use of 1 to 8 byte of data as to decode commands and operation activity. Is there protocol best adopted (rather than reinventing wheel)?, can you link me to nice presentation PPT or PDF file.

Is there off shelve CAN to USB module which make use of putty terminal which behave more like text based message and command.

What the best low cost CAN-bus monitoring device?
