File Association Issue
File Association Issue
(OP)
I have a newer (2wks old) installation of SW2010 x64 on a Windows 7 machine. Yesterday, I lost my file association for the .sldprt files to Solidworks. As with other files, I right-clicked on the part, selected "Open With" and selected Solidworks. Now when I try to open a part file from Windows Explorer, it opens a second instance of Solidworks. Also, I lost the ability to Rename, Pack & Go, etc from the context menu for part files. I uninstalled Solidworks and re-installed with no avail. Any suggestions to get things back to normal would be appreciated.

RE: File Association Issue
Nonetheless, this SolidWorks KB solution is related to icons but I think it will fix your issue also and then if that doesn't work there are a bazillion hits on google for solutions regarding file association in windows (but most just walk you through the steps you already took).
Good luck!

Answer: Restore the icon association for SolidWorks files using these steps:
1. Start Windows® Explorer.
2. From the menu, select Tools->Folder Options.
3. Activate the file types tab.
4. In the registered file types list, select the SLDPRT, SLDASM or SLDDRW extension as required.
5. Click advanced.
6. In the Edit File Type dialog, click Change Icon.
7. Click Browse and browse to the location where SolidWorks is installed.
8. Select the file SLDWORKS.EXE and click Open.
9. Select correct icon and click OK.
10. Click OK twice to close the Folder Options dialog.

RE: File Association Issue
I have mentioned before, always use SolidWorks Explorer for renaming/replacing/etc files.
