Need to learn GD&T

Need to learn GD&T

Need to learn GD&T

(OP)
Hi,

I am a complete beginner at designing and i need to learn GD&T. Where do i start? books? videos? quick suggestions? Anything would be really appreciated.

Thanks

RE: Need to learn GD&T

First of all, before doing anything, I would suggest to think about which GD&T standard is mandatory or more common in country/company where you work. Most frequently used are:
- American ASME Y14.5;
- group of ISO (European) standards.
There are some very fundamental differences between these two and IMHO this fact should have significant impact on whole learning process (choosing proper handbooks, training company etc.).

Being aware of this I would suggest taking really comprehensive live training on fundamentals of GD&T. You will not gain expert knowledge after completing such course but for sure it will help you in better understanding of any book you take later on. It would be also good if you have a copy of a standard you try to follow.

RE: Need to learn GD&T

Are you working now? If so you should start with the standard used at your company. Use what ever resources are available to you and read the standard. Also ask questions of other designers and engineers where you work about what is used for your products. If the company offers a course, take it. If they don't, ask if they will pay for a course offered nearby. Read the standard and read it again. If your company does not have a copy, read what is available, but strongly suggest they obtain at least one copy.

If not working I would, if in the US, start with the newest standard in the US, ASME Y14.5-2009. As this is not yet in common use also learn then ASME Y14.5M-1994 standard. Find courses at local community colleges and tech schools in your area. Use the web to search for examples of how the standards are used and interpreted (this site is a good example).

Thanks for the advice.

Get your GDTP certification. ASME offers several online courses to help you prepare. At the end of the day, it looks good on a resume.
