pin connection column splice for moment frame

pin connection column splice for moment frame

pin connection column splice for moment frame

(OP)
i have moment frame and adding another level.
if i meet column deflection criteria, is pin connection splice ok?

any other suggestion for the best and most economical way to connect these columns?

RE: pin connection column splice for moment frame

delagina,

I see no reason why this shouldnt work.

One thing I would say though, if you are going to have to weld a plate to the top to bolt to then you may want to see if it is feasible to have a welded connection onto the existing. Just a thought.

RE: pin connection column splice for moment frame

Your connection looks okay to me but depending on plate thickness, bolt size and bolt spacing, it may not act much like a pin.

I agree with BA.  I think two vertical splice plates welded to the web of the existing column and bolted to the new would act more like a pin, if that's what you want.

If you have to use 4 bolts (OSHA), just put them in two rows as close as you can to the centerline of the two columns.  Otherwise use two on the centerline.

I don't know why you would specifically want a pin in that situation.  Any fixity you get will reduce column deflection.

@BA

NO, i dont want pin column splice at all.
I was assuming my detail was pin connected and asked if there would be any problem.

Thanks,

RE: pin connection column splice for moment frame

Is this the same structure where you need to add capacity to the existing WF columns.

Structurally there is no reason why this can't work. Since the structure has become taller there is more lateral force that needs to be resisted.

You can detail the flush end plate to transfer some moment but in terms of the analysis and design I would not rely on it unless absolutley required.

RE: pin connection column splice for moment frame

The endplate splice shown can be designed for moment.   For a simple "pinned" splice refer to the AISC typical compression splices.   The AISC splice provides flange plates and minimal web connection for stability.  If you model the columns are continuous then a moment splice would be required.  But this may also result in new forces in the existing bassinets connection.

no, this is not the same as the column where i need to add capacity. i do a number of "tiny" projects inside the plant where i add new steel to support new pipes, equipments, etc..

thanks,
