CO2 Cartridges and CE

CO2 Cartridges and CE

CO2 Cartridges and CE

(OP)
Hi All,

I'm working on a project that involves the use of a 45g CO2 cartridge like you would use for a paintball gun or inflatable life preserver.  We are going to sell the system which uses the cylinder as a source of pressurized gas.  My question is what EU Directive applies to such a cylinder/cartridge?  The three candidates I can find are the Simple Pressure Vessel Directive, TPED, and standard PED.  I do not believe the Simple Directive applies as the scope is limited to air and nitrogen under 30 bar max.  I saw something about an exemption in the TPED for CO2 "sparklets" which is what I believe these cylinders to be, but nowhere can I find the actual text of the exemption.  Lastly, if the PED applies, then this is easy as my cylinder would be classified as SEP and not require marking.

Thanks,

-Mike

RE: CO2 Cartridges and CE

Hello Vidaman,

First check if this cartridges are excluded from the scope of the PED. CO2 is considered as an dangerous good.
Probably Art 1 exclusion 3.19 is applicable.

I did an swift check on the ADR. According to special provisions 584 and 653 you might have an escape. So your cartridges are not subject to the requirements of ADR. But you need to check all the exclusions of the PED (Art 1 exclusion 3.19 )

Assuming non of the exlusions are applicable you need to aplly the PED. In my opinion PED Art. 3.3 is applicable. So SEP is correct for your application. See also guideline 1/5.

I hope I didn't make your question even more complicated.

Best wishes,
Martin

RE: CO2 Cartridges and CE

There is some rule about the used of CO2 and N2O cartridges. If I recall correctly the end use is to be stated on the cartridge.

I have some of the 8 gram N2O cartridges that state for use in whipped cream dispensers but it doesn't say only. My cartridges are from Austria.
