Points Drive Airfoil Profile?

Points Drive Airfoil Profile?

Points Drive Airfoil Profile?

(OP)
Hi Everyone,

If I have a table full of points, is there a way to insert this in to NX Excel & have it create the airfoil profile?  If so how?

Thanks

RE: Points Drive Airfoil Profile?

If the points are organized so that they represent the wings cross sections/profiles, you can create splines from a text file.  For information about the formatting of the data, open the User Documentation/Help Files and search on the string "Inputting Points from a File".  There you will find several approaches for creating curves and/or surface from text files of data points.

HI John,

I found the info., but it's still not clear to me on how to set one one up.

I have point clouds at specified radial heights or I have an Excel table with X & Y positions.

Are there any examples to seeh how this works?

Thanks again...

What version of NX are you using?

Attached is a simple example file.  Open a new Imperial units (Inch) part file and go to...

Insert -> Curve -> Spline...

...and select the 'Through Points' option.  Then push the 'Points from File' button and select the attached file.  This creates a curve which represents the bowl of a wine glass.

Hi John,

  Thanks for the example.

I did create something from the DAT file & I guess it's in a bowl shape.  However, it appears to more a a single line entity or spline or nothing like a wine glass.

Is this what it is suppose to be?

As for the table - How to put headers in the columns, without having file read them?  Can this be table also be inserted into NX Excel to generate profiles?

Thanks again.

RE: Points Drive Airfoil Profile?

Yes, if you sweep the curve about the Z-axis.

If your points represent airfoil sections, then you will need to create a .dat file for each section and use the technique I described above to convert the points into curves which can then be used to create the airfoil shape as a surface/solid model.
