Simplest method - copy a part -all references broken

Simplest method - copy a part -all references broken

Simplest method - copy a part -all references broken

(OP)
I'm looking for the simplest-fastest- cleanest way to make a copy of a part with all references broken from the original, with all features available for subsequent design changes. This is a case where it is more efficient to start from a copy and not need to manage changes in configurations. It seems that doing a save as leaves references. I'm using the basic core version. Breaking references leaves me nothing to edit. Often when I split a body from a mutly body ( part file ). I want to be able to call that body a completely separate part with all it's features available for editing. I know this is very basic.
I have searched the forums and have ordered some books on Solidworks

RE: Simplest method - copy a part -all references broken

Did you have "Save as Copy" Checked when you did "Save As"? It's a check box located at the lower section of the dialog box. When you create this, close out you assy's and parts and open the new copy.

Hopes this helps,

RE: Simplest method - copy a part -all references broken

"Save As" is actually kind of a misnomer... "Save As" in Solidworks is more like a "rename this part xxx to part yyy and update the name in everything that's using it"

"Save As Copy" is what you want.

I think both options are useful, but it's more than a little confusing. Also it's this little checkbox, right? One obscure checkbox should not have this much power!!
