How to design a pump in solidworks

How to design a pump in solidworks

How to design a pump in solidworks

(OP)
I already have specs for a pump and I'm trying to get some experience by doing some modeling work for my brother-in-law while finishing up college.  Currently, I'm having problems designing the actual pump body for a recessed impeller vortex pump as can be seen on the homepage at http://www.esscopumps.com/.
If anyone can give me some starting points as to how to draw this in Solidworks that would be great.  I started with drawing an increasing radius arc and it works great until I get to the point of putting the outflow tube on and then I run into problems.  I'm stumped on how to get this pump drawn with the empty cavity in the middle, and have the entire thing be all one unit.

Thanks in advance!

Go through the tutorials (help->solidworks tutorials) and pay attention to extrude cuts and shells.

When you get stuck - roll up the feature tree, save, zip and attach your file here for someone to take a look and give some pointers.

Didn't quite know what you meant by roll up the feature tree so I just saved the whole part...let me know if I'm missing something here.

The problem I have is where the outflow goes, I can't seem to get the 'in between' space to fill in.  I basically extruded a half circle or the profile around a line.  The lines don't exactly match up as you'll see because I smoothed the whole thing out.  This is mainly for a display of solidworks and for me to gain experience and not critical to a project.

I also need to put a flange on one side that is raised and would extend down to the pump body.  I had tried to do this but it kept giving me problems like it can't go down to two seperate bodies...it'll extrude down to one but as you go around the pump body the distance changes and it acts like it wants to go down the same distance.

If there is an easier way to design these, I have no problem starting over.  I've got most of the other parts modeled already so I'm ready to put those in to the body for an assembly.

Thanks for the help and hopefully my comments explain my problems.

Assuming there was supposed to be a file attached, I'd say that's what you're missing.

RE: How to design a pump in solidworks

If the open edges line up you can just extrude from one edge to the other.

RE: How to design a pump in solidworks

Open a Sketch on the top plane.

Convert entities > select open edges of the pump.
Close the sketch w/ a tiny straight line right at the 'v'.

Extrude, from a vertex on the inside to a vertex on the outside.

You can also insert a plane parallel to the top plane and coincident w/ a vertex on the  open edge.

RE: How to design a pump in solidworks

Once you have the body closed, you can cut to make the inlet and impeller holes, extrude from the top plane or a reference plane to make the flanges and bolt circle.

RE: How to design a pump in solidworks

I noticed that your sketches are not fully constrained and that you used a 3dsketch for what is really a 2D sketch.  I recommend you go through the built in tutorials and pay special attention to sketch relations and creating workplanes.
You should also indicate when not using the latest release as you are likely to get solutions you cannot open in older release.

I had been messing around with certain sketches and may not be using them.  I think I got the body closed in with the extra space.  I ended up using the convert entities but the only way I could do it was on the 3d sketch using a 2d plane.  I've done the 3d sketch tutorial included by making the oven rack but I'll have to mess around with it some more.  I'm going to try and get the flanges on now and send it off if you would look at what I have at that point.  I feel like I'm making some progress now at least.

If you can let me know which sketches seem to be messed up that would be awesome.  Thanks!

RE: How to design a pump in solidworks

I had spent some time in pump industry though I didn't deigned much of them.

First I would create a master sketch and then will build my part/features taking reference from it.
