Rotate an assembly is Solidworks

Rotate an assembly is Solidworks

(OP)

Hi. I am a new user of Solidworks and I am have recieved a assembly model that is upside down (rotated 180deg) I do not want to have to rebuild the assembly. Does anyone know how I can just rotate the whole assembly

Thanks,
Scott

RE: Rotate an assembly is Solidworks

Unground the fixed component and use appropriate mates between the part origin workplanes and the assembly workplanes.

RE: Rotate an assembly is Solidworks

Upside down relative to what?  You can just alter your views as well.  Just hit the spacebar.

Upside down reletive to when I place it in the drawing or say I want to look at the front view. The guy that did the model has very limited time in Solidworks and he cannot explain how it became inverted. I have tried to find where the ground is and I can't find one. I just want to rotate the whole model 180 deg. but I don't want to remove the mates, and I have tried to align the surfaces of the model parts with the assembly planes but it just asks me if I want to break the relationships and then I'm back to redefining mates

RE: Rotate an assembly is Solidworks

Quick and simple fix ... Rotate the drawing view to suit.

Possible permanent fix ... If the first component in the Feature Manager is fixed (ie it has a small (f) prefixed to its name), right click the component and select Float. If you are really lucky, the whole assy will now be rotatable. If it is, create mates to position it to your needs. If it isn't rotatable, use the "Quick and simple fix".

Thanks, everyone. I have tried to give it a go, but to no avail, it seems as though I will have to rebuild the model. Still got a lot to learn in Solidworks, is there any good places to find tips and tricks?

RE: Rotate an assembly is Solidworks

Using your view orientations, position the assembly to what you want the front view to be. Hit the space bar, click on 'Front' then click on the 'reset standard views' button. Click 'Yes' at the next prompt. Hold down your shift key and hit the down arrow once. Hit your space bar, click on 'Top', 'reset standard views', yes.
Your model should now be orientated as you want it to be.

As for tips and tricks, they're all over the place. Here at eng-tips, my blog, at the SolidWorks forums, solidsmack.com, usingsoldiworks.com, on youtube. Just do a Google search, you'll find them.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for that info. I have had a go and it will not work for me for some reason. I did exactly as you said but it will not change. I will keep trying

What I'm trying to do is flip the model so the top becomes the bottom and vise versa.

Ah! got it, I needed to use the update standard views button. Thanks Jeff! that's a big help :)
