Sprinkler Design for Generator Room

Sprinkler Design for Generator Room

Sprinkler Design for Generator Room

(OP)
I have a Diesel Gen Room in a new fully sprinklered hospiital. There are two generators with one 250 gal diesel fuel day tank (elec consultant has yet to determine if he will have one daytank serving both or two tanks 250 gal tanks). Is the appropriate sprinkler system design Ord Gp 2 or Extra Gp 1 for either scenario.

RE: Sprinkler Design for Generator Room

It depends on the arrangement of the fuel tanks and fuel oil piping systems. If all liquid supply and withdrawl connections are at the top of the tank, I have accepted OH2. If piping is below the tank's liquid level I would specify a minimum EH1.

You should review NFPA 37 to determine if they have introduced any new requirements for fire protection of indoor engine-driven generators.

Thks Stookeyfpe - I don't have a copy of NFPA 37 - Could u shed a little light on it's requirements.

I will confirm if the supply will be from the bottom or top.

RE: Sprinkler Design for Generator Room

My analysis is not based on NFPA 37. It's based on engineering judgment. You want answers to my questions requires a far more detailed engineering analysis. In other words - I gave your a free analysis. But it is incomplete.

RE: Sprinkler Design for Generator Room

Actually skdesigner, you don't have to be a member to access the codes, just subscribed. You can't print them, but you can view current and couple years back.

Thks Guys
I looked at NFPA 37, 2010 on-line and it states Ex Gp 1 - 0.3 over 2500 ft2.
I am going to take that approach in the design.

RE: Sprinkler Design for Generator Room

And you do not have to be a member of NFPA to buy the Standards, but members do get a small break on the price.
