Bulged furnce and reversal chamber tube plate in HMSB
Bulged furnce and reversal chamber tube plate in HMSB
(OP)
Hi
This is the first time I've posted a question. I'm looking on suggestions on how to quantify and measure a bulged first section of furnace tube in a Horizontal Multitubular steam boiler. The furnace crown is bulged and I've just inherited the boiler from my predecessor. (low water level was the cause 10 years ago). I'm now undertaking a design review of the boiler to see if fit for continued use. We will be undertaking full NDT and metal replication.
I just need suggestions on how to measure the bulge. The furnace tube is approx 1250mm diam. Boiler is oil fired operating at 200 PSI, 3 pass HMSB. Reversal chamber tube plate is also bulged and needs to be measured.
Anyone ever drawn a profile or measured a bulged section?
Thanks, Bosco

What I would suggest is a thickness check of the bulged tube crown (using a D meter or ultrasonic examination) at the apex and progress into unbulged material. See if you can estimate the increase in OD in comparison to unaffected tube material OD. Last, I would try to perform some type of surface NDT to check for cracks or tears along the sides of the tube.
The same applies for the reversal chamber bulged region.

Is there any evidence of either the furnace tube or the horizontal tubes being pulled loose or through their rolled joint at the tube to tubesheeet joint(s)?
If the rear tubesheet has bulged and is being held in a bulged position by the tubes that have shifted position at their rolled joints. It may spring back when the tubes are removed. The furnace tube: I doubt that it will spring back, however.

What I need help with is how to quantify and measure bulges so that comparison can be made at next exam to ensure not becoming worse? u/s will not show up further bulging. How do i draw profile of bulged section or make up a tempate/trammel?
