BRL Formula - Steel Penetrability Factor

BRL Formula - Steel Penetrability Factor

BRL Formula - Steel Penetrability Factor

(OP)
Hi guys,

Is anyone familiar with the Ballistic Research Laboratory formula for predicting penetration of missiles through steel plate?

I have been asked to evaluate the penetability of a high hardness alloy ballistic steel plate using this formula, but I cannot find any values of the steel penetrability constant (Ks) for different grades of steel. It seems that this value is commonly taken as 1.0, but I was wondering if anyone has ever used this formula with other values of Ks.

RE: BRL Formula - Steel Penetrability Factor

I'm not familiar with the research but I imagine the Modulus of Elasticity has much to do with it if the missile is not exiting the back.  "E" doesn't change much with grade.

I haven't been able to get my hands on the original research. I do know that the formula predicts the thickness of a steel plate at which a missile "just" perforates the plate. My original thoguht was that the penetrability factor was related to the toughness or ductility of the plate material. If it was based on young's modulus, it would make sense that it would be taken as 1.0 for all steels.
