Stainless bolts in AESS canopy

Stainless bolts in AESS canopy

I'm working on an HSS architecturally exposed structural steel canopy with some stainless, exposed screws, currently designed as countersunk (3/4" dia - 10).  The aisc 360-05 spec does not list anything for stainless steel bolts or screws.

A193, B8(M) could work based on calcs, but if they aren't referenced in the 360 spec, can they be used with any amount of testing and chem comp certs?

Thanks for any suggestions.

RE: Stainless bolts in AESS canopy

Refer to ASCE 8-02...it provides design info on stainless steel and SS fasteners.

I assume your HSS sections are on the order of 1/2" thick...otherwise countersinking a 3/4-10 cap screw will be difficult and will result in reduced capacity.

Thanks, Ron.

I'll check out asce 8, but if they don't list it in the aisc 360 spec, how can a bolt or screw be qualified?

RE: Stainless bolts in AESS canopy

ASCE 8-02 is a code referenced document in your area, so it applies.
