HVAC Controls Course/Class

HVAC Controls Course/Class

(OP)
Hello,

I am a new mechanical engineer working in the HVAC field in a government office.  I am interested in taking a course that covers HVAC control strategies.  I have taken the ASHRAE online course that is an introduction to controls but I would like a more in-depth and hands-on course.

I am most interested in control strategies and how to produce excellent controls drawings.  Most classes that I have found are more technician specific.

I have noticed that the University of Wisconsin, Madison offers a DDC controls class and Johnson Controls offers a class (Fundamental Control Strategies for HVAC System).

Would someone please suggest an excellent HVAC controls course?

Thanks for any help, Mark

RE: HVAC Controls Course/Class

Have you tried with ARI, they must have great courses.

Controls is not my coup of tea but I think you've done good with your course (HVAC control strategies). An indeep understanding of control maybe is a concern of the companies that design the diveces because that is pure electronics, hardware, and software. Also the technical caracteristics and applications suggestions are from the selection catalogs, but how to use something you need when you don't even know what has been built? So I will recomend you to study only the products that offers the companies.

Once you comprehend the contol dynamic of the prosses (System) with drawings and flow diagrams you need a selection tool for controls (maybe there is one).

Not a class, but a really good resource:

Help to create non-proprietary specifications, point lists and schematics for a variety of standard systems. I find for custom work it is a little cumbersome, but it does help you get the basics.

Look into DeKalb Technical College in Clarkston, Georgia.  They have a whole degree program in building automation and controls.  There's also a distance-learning option in which one does all the class work from somewhere else, then spends a week (optionally more) in the lab at DeKalb.

I've worked with them -- great instructors, great program management.

Good on ya,
