Leakage from Octogonal Ring Joint flange
Leakage from Octogonal Ring Joint flange
(OP)
We are facing a leakage from an RTJ 16" #1500 flange. The service of the line is BFW (Boiler Feed Water). Most probably the leakage has formed a groove in the flange seat area. At the moment we don't have portable flange facing machine for repair of the groove. Can we try to build the groove by welding and then smoothen it by pencil grinding and lapping afterwards (using the ring gasket)?

RE: Leakage from Octogonal Ring Joint flange
You may have damage right at the flanks of the ring joint, thus providing a fluid leak pathway around the octagon donut. Your octagon donut may also be damaged.
I assume you're octagon donut is stainless steel. You may have a bad or previously used part, I would definitely be looking at trying another.

RE: Leakage from Octogonal Ring Joint flange
We succeeded in repairing the flange. We welded the pits and then lapped it using the damaged ring. A new ring was used and now its OK.
