A while back DekkerDesign asked the question:

Can anyone recommend a good program that would preferably tie in with SW to generate P&ID documents, either automatically or manually.

Does anyone have any updates or advise on this type of functionality on any platform?

RE: P&IDs: 2D to 3D integration

You have probably already seen this, but this was the only thing I found on this subject:

Solution Id: S-026952

Question:

In routing is it possible to use Microsoft Visio® to create Piping and Instrumentation (P&ID) schematic drawings of harness routes?

Answer:

SolidWorks routing can create drawings of flattened harness sub-assemblies. This sub-assembly could include many wires and cables.  Connectors in the route can be represented automatically as blocks in the drawing and these could be customized so that they represent the icons used in P&IDS. When the route is changed the drawing will update. This is the nearest SolidWorks comes to generating a P&ID diagram.

However, there is no way to automatically create a P&ID from SolidWorks routing.

Microsoft Visio can be used in conjunction with SolidWorks to create schematic diagrams manually.  It can be used to draw P&ID's but there is no link between this and the 3D model. Hence the automatic regeneration of the schematic diagram is not supported.

For piping routes, a .pcf can be generated that can be read into the Alias Isogen product to create piping isometrics.

RE: P&IDs: 2D to 3D integration

Dan,

After doing a little digging myself the best option I've come up with is to pick up one of the integrated packages for ECAD a that are starting to pop up (currently we are using ElecWorks). The PID's are being handled from within this package, but it closes the loop enough to make it a viable solution for what we are doing. As we have started our own panel layouts, the acquisition of this package for us was a no brainer, but I would have had trouble justifying it simply for the PID capability, even if it is cheaper than other packages out there that are PID specific.

Anyone heard of Aucotec?  Seems like they have it nailed down as well as it can be.
