Inspection of Gas holders

Inspection of Gas holders

Inspection of Gas holders

(OP)
Dear members,

Can anybody share with me the best method or the available method of inspecting gas holders? These gas holders stores the entire town gas for domestic use. I understand that there are various types of gas holders such as the water sealed and the piston type, however, what is the standard inspection that is normally carried out and specific NDT techniques available.

Any response and information is very much appreciated.

RE: Inspection of Gas holders

Your question is not clear. Please define your problem further, are you using cylinders, pressure vessels, etc. What is the "gas"?

RE: Inspection of Gas holders

He's clearly talking about fuel gas/ natural gas, stored at low pressure in a very large gravity powered accumulator, the 'gasholder'.  They typically look like a petroleum storage tank, except for an external framework, and the fact that they are made in sections that telescope, so the elevation of the top goes up and down.  They used to be a common sight in metropolitan areas of the US.  Many of them have disappeared in recent decades; I guess there are other, cheaper, less bulky, ways to store gas now.

I can sketch one from memory, except for the water seal, which might take a few minutes to figure out, but I have no idea how to inspect them.  ... other than 'carefully'.  winky smile

Hi Mike. thanks for your input and you are absolutely right. I am trying to find out the best approach of inspecting them and the critical area to look at. Should I treat it the way I inspect an atmospheric storage tanks? Is there any codes like API that govern such tanks?

RE: Inspection of Gas holders

A Google search on "gasholder inspection" without the quotes was productive.  Further filtering may produce something specific to your jurisdiction.
