How to get Shelby Sample into a 2.5 inch Direct Shear or Consolidation

How to get Shelby Sample into a 2.5 inch Direct Shear or Consolidation

(OP)
We are looking to try Shelby tube sampling for our firm, however I can only find 3 inch shelby tubes. All of our machines are for 2.5 inch CD samples. How do I get the 3 inch sample into the 2.5 inch machines without disturbing the sample? Or is there another place other than Humboldt that I can get a 2.5 inch Shelby Sampler?

Extrude the sample then trim it to fit.  Actually better than using smaller sampler.

I have used 2-1/2"id Shelby Tubes for over 35 years. With drier, silty or sandy soils or harder shales, you may not be able to trim them and therefore will extract the samples directly into your testing equipment. You need to go to a steel supply shop or a favorite machinist and order the tubing. They can then cut to size, drill the holes to match your sampler head and prepare the cutting edge, as required by your specifications or ASTM.

Acker Drill company has the 2 1/2" OD size and others.  We've used them for years.  www.ackerdrill.com

Regarding Stoph reply.
Always confirm that the tubes are 2-1/2" id or od   and be sure of what your requirements are. I made an order once, getting what I did not expect. I have learned that 2-1/2" od is more common from the suppliers and 2-1/2" id is needed for quite a bit of the testing equipment.
