Reverse Power

Reverse Power

Can someome please help me to describe Reverse Power in the Distribution portion of a utility?

RE: Reverse Power

Power flowing in when it should be flowing out, prevents you from "motorizing" a generator.

Thanks for the response Zog.  What about a Reverse Power Relay on a distribution Transformer?  Would that open the associated breakers to isolate the transformer?

RE: Reverse Power

Possibly.  It depends on the application.  From a purely electrical viewpoint, it is not really an issue for the distribution equipment including the transformer.  Voltage regulators and LTCs may need to deal with "reverse power" conditions because the assumptions normally built into the regulator control are not fully valid on reverse power flow.

RE: Reverse Power

Yes, if wired to do so and there is a reverse power event.

I am not sure what is meant by isolate the transformer. The transformer may still remain energized from the other side.  Not all distribution transformers require a reverse power relay. You need to provide more info about your set up to provide a meaningful answer.

A reverse power application will have at least two power sources.

The way I am reading in our training material is that when the reverse power relay in a distribution transformer senses a fault, or reverse power event, the relay initiates a trip sequence that opens the low side breaker then the high side breaker, protecting the transformer.  Our training material doesnt give any other explainations other than that.

From your posts I think I got the basic principle.  I very much appreciate your time!  THANKS!!

RE: Reverse Power

Sometimes people call Directional relays reverse power relays.
