Test Location for SA-182-F11 Flange

I wish to do Charpy testing on flanges taken from some large 600# valves, grade F11 material.  SA-182 and SA-961 (for common requirements) give no guidance, other than "by agreement between etc."

Is there any convention for this?  If not I expect I would take samples from one of the fatter regions.  BTW it is not for material certification but a post-mortem.

RE: Test Location for SA-182-F11 Flange

I would get a set from the gasket seat area, running parallel w/gasket seat.  Then another set radial from gasket seat, extending into the web between the bolt holes.

Concur with your idea that the thicker areas will be a poor, non-representative choice.

Look at SA 370.

SA-370 is clear as mud - the best answer I could get was 'same as the tensile location'.  I will continue swimming around there.

I think I found it - thanks!

Ok, look at the tensile testing specimen location section of A 370. You are going to need some protocol regarding specimen orientation to compare results.
