Thermofromed tray design in SW

Thermofromed tray design in SW

Thermofromed tray design in SW

(OP)

Hello there,

Regarding my question -creating a thermoformed tray for few products- i searched the forum and found some one had a suggestion as follows,  I was wondering if this is refereed to the same approach as creating a dummy block for the products and then using the indenting tool or some thing else? I didnt completely get the idea of "I flip the model over and use the Shell command".

Here is the comment:

"My normal workflow is to start with a solid block to simulate the extents of the tray.  I then create a single cut feature that will nest the product the tray is for, pattern as required.  I then apply radii as required to the cut features.  Lastly I flip the model over and use the Shell command.  Works great for transport trays and the like."

I really appreciate your tips,

That refers to making Cut-extrudes on the top face of the block for your product, then Shelling the bottom face of the block to complete the tray.

I hit Enter too soon.

I prefer to use this method over Indent, as many times you just don't need all the details when you are making a transport try or the like.

..for a more complex tray(containing many products)do you still think that would work? if so then probably I'll have to start from the beginning.

I already created the dummy of my products(going for the indent method) but at the and I am stuck in indenting the dummy block. It keeps giving me the error of "consider changing geometry or change the clearance thickness.."

you can have a look on the dummy attached.

Thanks very much for your time,

Are all 8 bodies in this part your "dummy part"?  Are you trying to make this whole thing or are you needing the negative of this?  If you need the negative of this then try to use the Combine feature.

sorry, i should have mentioned it before, this is the negative part (or assuming the die part of thermoforming)of the tray which its design is my ultimate goal.

and yes, we are planing to put different/many products in this one tray afterward, it has different compartment for many components/products.

Having been a designer of these trays in a former life, I should remind you that shrinkage is involved when you actually make your tooling. How much depends on your material. The tool maker should resolve this for you.

RE: Thermofromed tray design in SW

I wouldn't worry about making the die, unless that is part of your work load.  I would just make the tray as you require it and let the tool maker/vendor worry about what the die needs to look like.  There is also a requirement for draft angle, typically for thermoforming it can be around 5 degrees.

Uploaded is a simple tray to give you some ideas.

MadMango-

Thanks for your comment and the sample, ..no, i dont care about the tooling/die nor the way the manufacturer is going to make the tray, but my point is since I already created this negative drawing it is more convenient to continue on using the indent(or similar) feature rather than starting from scratch and shelling a solid block, ..currently the indent feature does not accept this drawing,

Dan,

Thanks for your try, ..yes, that's the idea and as you said it should be more detailed afterwards,

I will fiddle around with it to see if can get the final drawing.

Thanks for your interest and help, appreciate it,
